Proyecto sobre Organización, Desarrollo, Educación e Investigación (PODER—in English, Project on Organization, Development, Education, and Research), is a longtime TCI partner advocating for corporate transparency and accountability in Latin America from a human rights perspective, and working to strengthen civil society actors affected by business practice. PODER focuses on local communities affected by companies in non-offshorable industries, including the extractive, infrastructure, transportation, and heavy manufacturing sectors.
The Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (SOMO) is an Amsterdam-based research organization that conducts and shares action-oriented research that exposes the underlying structures, impact, and power of multinational corporations, with the goal of building a fair and sustainable world in which public interests outweigh corporate interests.
The Counter, SOMO’s pro bono global corporate research “helpdesk” for environmental and social justice activists challenging corporate power, is dedicated to corporate investigation and advocacy services to support civil society and journalists globally. The Counter’s corporate research team investigates companies by “following the money” to reveal corporate and capital structures, shell companies in tax havens, hidden profits, secret owners, supply chains, and influential investors. Research provided by The Counter can be used in public interest investigations, the media, public campaigns, or in court, so activists are better equipped with data, evidence, and analyses when standing up to company giants.
ODI is an independent, global think tank developing and delivering research that informs policy design and convenes leadership across global challenges such as global cooperation; advancing human rights, addressing conflict, and promoting peace; the climate, environment, and biodiversity crisis; digitalisation; and fostering a more equitable and sustainable global economic order.
Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) is a nonprofit environmental non-governmental organization that aims to protect Jamaica’s natural resources using education, advocacy, and the law to influence individual and organizational behavior and public policy and practice. Their projects across Jamaica have included beach and community clean-ups, public education and awareness campaigns about proper solid waste management, schools environment programme, environmental advocacy focused on a wide range of issues, and conservation projects.
Based in Africa and comprised of 123 civil society organizations, African Coalition for Corporate Accountability (ACCA) works to support communities whose rights are adversely impacted by activities of corporations. Through partnership with TCI, their work focuses on Free, Prior, and Informed Consent; improving access to remedy; engaging in business-and-human-rights-related treaty processes; and issues regarding Chinese investment in Africa.
The Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) is a global alliance of attorneys, scientists, and other advocates collaborating across borders to help communities speak out for clean air, clean water, and a healthy planet. Through targeted funding they work to build the capacity of community advocates to protect communities and the environment through law.
Cultural Survival is an Indigenous-led nonprofit that advocates for Indigenous Peoples’ rights and supports Indigenous communities’ self-determination, cultures, and political resilience. Through TCI’s support, CS will deepen their organizational strategy, carry out shareholder advocacy, tracking and reporting violence against Indigenous Human Rights Defenders, strategic litigation, and legislative advocacy.
Greenwatch is an Uganda-based environmental rights advocacy NGO whose main objective is to promote public participation in the sustainable use, management and protection of the environment and natural resources through advocacy, training and the promotion of environmental rights. Greenwatch is building judicial capacity to address climate change and advance climate justice utilizing strategies and tools such as workshops, media campaigns on climate justices, and publication of resource material.
ECCJ advocates for European laws that guarantee corporate accountability and transparency and ensures justice for people affected by corporate malpractice by working with decision-makers robust European and national policies and laws, while also building a strong corporate accountability movement. With TCI’s support, ECCJ is working to ensure a strong Sustainable Corporate Governance Directive that would also provide for corporate liability; enhance corporate transparency through the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive; and secure improvements to access to judicial remedy for victims of corporate abuse.
Hip Hop Caucus uses the power of cultural expression to empower communities who are first and worst impacted by injustice by strengthening democracy while advocating for climate, environmental, and economic justice and human and civil rights. With TCI’s support, they work to map issues at the intersection of climate and race and develop a tangible divest/invest/both campaign strategy to engage communities and stakeholders.
PODER is a regional, civil society, non-profit organization that seeks to promote the transparency and accountability of companies in Latin America from a human rights perspective and to strengthen civil society actors affected by business practices in order to act as guarantors of long-term accountability. Partnering with TCI will enable PODER to strengthen and expand their work at the intersection of corporate accountability and climate justice as well as share their tools and strategies with other NGOs in Latin America.
